Best Foot Forward

The industry is reinventing itself. Distribution is easy but how do artists get noticed? That is the real question.

Struggling musicians no longer rely on the sale of their album to finance their lives without  also having to get a day job.  So most recording takes place evenings and weekends. Every band member has a different job and you have to coordinate around them. So you throw down scratch tracks and drums. Then each player comes in when they are free to track their parts by themselves rather than it being a “band” effort. This may seem to be efficient but it really is not. The good ideas always come out when they bounce around off all the members. Thus, the song suffers. I suggest a different approach for bands trying to get off the ground. Albums and EP’s are great but expensive to do correctly. Rather then thinning your budget out over several songs dedicate yourselves to ONE song and put all your heart into it.

In this business you are lucky if you are ever known for one song let alone an entire album. The key here is getting noticed. It is like fishing. You don’t throw all your different kinds of bait in at the same time. You grab that prized lure and pray you get a bite. It takes time for most fans to get into a band enough to listen to their entire album. So you got to lead them there with a trail of bread crumbs. The truth is you have to have a day job to support your passions. That leaves little time to rehearse, promote, gig, and especially record an entire album. Be real about what time you have and make every second count.

Don’t let the music suffer because you have all these great songs that simply must get recorded. Put your life into one and get it out there. When you save a little more, record another one. Don’t take a year to finish an album. Take a week to finish a masterpiece.
